Ece Algan’s research is focused on globalization of media, the impacts of new communication technologies in the Middle East, cultural studies and media ethnography. Her current research is on the role interactive local media play in constructing youth communities and media’s influence on women’s negotiation and reinterpretation of patriarchy, traditions and gender identities in rural Turkey. Her teaching interests include International Communication, Media and Culture, Media and the Middle East, Audience Research and Analysis, Ethnography of Communication, Feminist Communication to Communication Theories, Gender, Race and Media, and Computer Mediated Communication.

Dr. Bahk’s teaching areas include mass communication, computer mediated communication, and intercultural communication as well as communication theory and research. His recent research interests involve entertainment media effects on health attitudes, Internet usage and involvement, and interethnic/interracial/intercultural perception and interaction. He is an active member of the International Communication Association (ICA) and the Association for Educators in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC).

My research interests revolve around the social construction of identity, African- American Communication issues, and the Rhetoric of Race. Currently, I am conducting research on Mixed-Race identity construction and rhetorical constructions of African-American masculinity via the media. I teach classes in Rhetorical Theory, Research Methods, Argumentation, and Ethical Issues in Communication.

She is the recipient and a project director of the Title VI Grant from the U.S. Department of Education. Her work has appeared in International and Intercultural Communication Annual, Southern Communication Journal, Intercultural Communication Studies, Free Speech Yearbook, and Gazette:The International Journal for Communication Studies among many other publications. She is the co-editor of Communicating Ethnic and Cultural Identity. Currently she is working on another book on conflict management and dispute resolution. She has conducted numerous workshops on communication and conflict management. She serves as the coordinator of the Asian Studies Minor and Interim Co-director of International Institute, 2007-2008. She was the Chair of Intercultural Communication Interest Group, Eastern Communication Association. She served as a president of the Association for Chinese Communication Studies, an organization affiliated with the National Communication Association. Her teaching and research interests include intercultural communication, interpersonal communication, conflict and communication, mediation theory and practice, and communication in multicultural organizations. Additionally, she is a qualified mediator and court interpreter. She has been a recipient of the University Diversity Award and Outstanding Asian Faculty Award from the CSUSB Asian Faculty, Staff and Student Association.

She has co-edited and co-authored a textbook, Communicating Ethnic and Cultural Identity. She has published in the Howard Journal of Communication, Journal of Pragmatics, Intercultural Communication Studies, Intercultural Communication: A Reader, Our Voices, Intercultural Encounters, New Directions In Teaching and Learning, and others. Her teaching and research interests are in Cultural and Intercultural Communication, Ethnography of Communication, Instructional Communication, Language and Behavior, and Spiritual Communication. Her primary research interest is studying the communication patterns of the Chinese (from Hong Kong, Taiwan, Mainland China, and Chinese American) in cultural and intercultural interactions. She has been recognized for her research with three presentations on Top Paper panels at the national and regional conventions. She has been a recipient of the University Diversity award and the university-wide Outstanding Advisor award. She is the former chair of the Asian Pacific American Communication Division (APAC) affiliated with the National Communication Association (NCA) and also has chaired the APAC Caucas of NCA. In addition she is the Past President of the Association for Chinese Communication Studies of NCA.

Donna Gotch teaches a variety of courses including Oral Communication, Critical Thinking Through Argumentation, Intercultural Communication, Communication Theory, Classroom Communication, Ethical Aspects in Communication, and Senior Project. She also teaches the Humanities Assessment courses in the Liberal Studies Program and the public speaking course as part of the CSUSB Honor's Program. Gotch is a life member of WSCA (Western States Communication Association). She served as Co-Chair of the Local Hosts Committee for the 2006 WSCA Convention in Palm Springs. She is a former Chair of the Communication and Instruction Interest Group of WSCA. Gotch is the author of the Instructor’s Resource Manual for Intercultural Communication: A Reader. She currenly serves as the department webmaster.

My research interests center around Interpersonal Communication, Aging, and Health. Currently I am studying portrayals of cancer in the media, and how cancer narratives can be used to bridge health literacy and cultural divides. I teach classes in Persuasion, Relational Communication, Research Methods, and Health Communication.

Dr. Heisterkamp’s research interests involve the relationship between social action and social structures and the manner in which conversation can be examined to understand mediator behavior, conflict, and interpersonal relationships, particularly gay and lesbian relationships. He teaches courses at the undergraduate and graduate level in conflict and mediation; relational communication; nonverbal communication; and research methods. Dr. Heisterkamp is a member of the University Instructionally Related Programs Board, the Sexual Harassment Advisory Committee, the University Intellectual Life Committee, and a member of the Women’s Studies affiliated faculty. He has been an active member of Western States Communication Association and the National Communication Association with particular involvement in the Language and Social Interaction groups of each association.

Heather Hundley teaches courses in mass media including media history, media and culture, and media law. She teaches several graduate courses including introduction to graduate studies, interpretative approaches, seminar in mass media, and digital culture. Her research interests range from issues of gender, feminism, sport, pop culture, law, and health related issues such as portrayals of alcohol consumption, cancer, and sexual promiscuity. Hundley is the 2nd Vice President of WSCA (Western States Communication Association). She is the Research Chair, Mass Comunication Division, for NCA (National Communication Association). Hundley also serves as Treasurer/Individual Membership Director for ORWAC (Organization for Research on Women and Communication).

I teach courses in film and media studies and journalism. I do research in film and journalism studies. While I have been teaching in this department, I introduced the course Visual Communication (COMM 380) and Topics in Contemporary Cinema and Society (COMM 386). I obtained a Fulbright grant to teach at the University of Lodz in Poland in 2001, and I have received two grants from CSUSB’s Teachers Across Borders program. I am currently coordinating an effort to launch an interdisciplinary film studies minor in the College of Arts and Letters. Before coming to CSUSB in 1995 to teach in the department and advise the Coyote Chronicle from 1995 to 2004, I taught journalism and film studies at Temple University in Philadelphia, where I obtained my Ph.D. My dissertation was entitled “The Emergence of the Close-up Shot in American Narrative Cinema, 1911-1921.” I was born in Omaha, Nebraska, received a B.A. in English from Smith College, an M.Ed. from Antioch University in Philadelphia, an M.J. in journalism from Temple, and a Ph.D. from Temple. I have three adult children, two in Philadelphia and one in Woodside, California, who all work in the new media. I live in northern San Bernardino with my two dogs, a cat and two parakeets.

Dr. Metts holds a B.A. and an M.A. in Radio and Television from San Francisco State University, and a Ph.D. from The Ohio State University in Communication with specializations in Cultural Studies and Rhetoric. His areas of interest include, contemporary critical theory, visual culture, media criticism and aesthetics. His papers have been published in Visual Anthropology and FEEDBACK, and he is currently producing and directing a documentary – Academic Freedom and the Dirty 30: Toward a Critical Pedagogy. He was a participant in the Fifteenth Annual Academy of Television Arts and Sciences Foundation Faculty Seminar. He has served as a reviewer for Modern Language Studies, the Susquehanna University Press, and a number of video production textbooks. He teaches courses in video production, screenwriting, visual communication, and media and culture. He is a member of the National Communication Association, the Broadcast Education Association and the Union for Democratic Communications.

Ahlam Muhtaseb earned her doctorate in Mass Communication (2003) from the University of Memphis. Her Master degree was in Journalism/Public Relations. She joined the Department of Communication Studies at CSUSB in 2002. She teaches graduate and undergraduate classes in public relations and media studies, including Introduction to Public Relations; Public Relations in Communcation; Issues Management & Crisis Communication; Strategic Public Relations; Computer-Mediated Communication; Gender, Race, & Media; International Communication; and Digital Culture. Her research interests are alternative media, media effects, and narrative theory.

Bradford Owen teaches courses in media studies, digital production, and screenwriting. His research interests include media psychology, narrative theory, storytelling in new media, and film theory. Mihaela holds a M.A. in Sociology (1995, Central European University) and a M.A. in Communications (2001, University of Pennsylvania). She is currently working on her dissertation on moral risk and the evolution of the concept of obscenity in American judicial discourse. Mihaela’s research interests include communication theories, communication law and policy, technology, harmful media content (effect and governance) and transnational media regulation. Her teaching interests include Computer Mediated Communication, Mass Media Effects and Media Sex and Violence.
